What we make
Interiors for places that move.
A vehicle asks more of an interior than a room does. Walls lean and curve, the ceiling changes height, doors and wheel arches claim their share of space and every drawer has to stay closed on a rough road. For twenty-five years we have built interiors for boats, where the same rules apply. Specialist vehicles are a natural extension of that work.
The side entry opens to a curved upholstered banquette, warm fluted timber and a softly lit threshold.
Selected work: 2025
A clinic without
a waiting room.
SKN.JECT brings private aesthetic treatments to clients across Melbourne in a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter. When its founder first wrote to us, the van had not yet been delivered. The brief was simple to say and demanding to meet: an interior that felt calm and quietly luxurious yet worked every day as a place of treatment.
We designed and built the interior in close collaboration with the client, turning a new Sprinter into a finished room. A curved upholstered banquette welcomes clients at the side door, its line carried through a fluted timber base, rounded shelves and a circular mirror. Beyond it, the treatment bed sits within reach of fitted cabinetry, work surfaces, a sink with fresh water, task lighting and ventilation. Upholstered wall and ceiling panels follow the Sprinter's changing geometry, so the vehicle reads as one quiet room rather than a collection of parts.
The finished van left our Hemmant workshop in 2025 and travelled to Melbourne, where it now serves as SKN.JECT's mobile studio.

Our role
Interior design and complete fit-out, with the client
Completed
2025
The treatment area brings storage, work surfaces, water, lighting and equipment into one compact arrangement.
Fluted timber follows the cabinet's curved face, turning a sink unit into part of the interior's material language.
Wall-mounted storage and touchless sanitising equipment sit within a quiet rear elevation.
Mobile clinic and business vehicle fit-out
A working room for a business on the move.
Clinics, studios, showrooms and service vehicles ask the same thing of an interior: that it serves the work and carries the character of the business, in a space a few metres long. We begin with how the day unfolds. Where does the client sit? Where does the practitioner stand? What must be within reach and what should stay out of sight? Then we build the seating, cabinetry, work surfaces and storage around those answers. The lighting, water and equipment are integrated so the working layer stays quiet.
- Layout planned around your equipment and your routine
- Seating, cabinetry, work surfaces and storage
- Lighting, water and treatment or display equipment integrated into the joinery
- Finishes chosen for cleaning, handling and daily use

Luxury rail interiors
Craft for the long journey.
Passenger carriages are compact, heavily used and expected to feel generous. We make cabin fit-outs, furniture, tables, storage and architectural joinery for rail interiors. The work is made in our workshop and installed on site or at the depot under controlled conditions, with finishes chosen for repeated daily use.

The Ghan, Platinum Class
Marxcraft contributed bespoke interior furnishings, cabin fit-outs and crafted joinery to the refurbishment of The Ghan's Platinum Class luxury rail interiors.
Compact seating, bunks and storage
Every centimetre given a purpose.
In a vehicle, furniture works harder than it does at home. A seat may conceal a tank, a bunk may become a bench by day and every locker is opened and closed on uneven roads. We have made bed bases, lockers, settees and storage for boats for more than two decades. We bring the same thinking to vehicles: templated to the real shell, fixed with movement in mind and finished to be touched every day.
The banquette line continues through upholstery and timber, keeping the path through the van clear.

Refurbishment and component replication
Worn pieces,
faithfully made again.
Hard-working interiors wear at the edges first: a cabinet front, a table top, a hinge that has loosened its timber. We repair what can be saved and replicate what cannot, matching profile, veneer, colour and sheen so the new piece sits among the old without announcing itself. Where no drawings survive, we scan and model the original. For fleets and carriages, one surveyed original can become a set of consistent replacements.

How we work
From a bare shell
to a finished room.
01
Understand the work
We learn how the vehicle will be used, by whom and on what kind of day. We agree early who is responsible for engineering and approvals.
02
Measure the real vehicle
We measure and template the actual shell, scanning it where the geometry calls for it. We model the interior in Rhino before timber is cut.
03
Make it in Hemmant
Joinery, seating and panels are made and finished in our workshop and spray booths, with mock-ups where proportion or access needs testing.
04
Fit, test and hand over
We install and adjust what we built, test it within our scope and hand over with care and maintenance notes.
Vehicle engineering, modification approvals and electrical certification remain with the licensed professionals responsible for them.
Why a boatbuilder
Different platform.
The same discipline.
Boats taught us to build inside curved, moving and crowded spaces, where every fixing is seen and every kilogram counts. Those lessons travel well.

Design and technical
3D laser scanning, Rhino modelling and full-size mock-ups.
Workshop and materials
Solid timber, veneer, upholstered panels and composites, cut on our CNC routers and finished by hand.
Project management and delivery
Founder-level oversight and one point of contact from brief to handover.
Quality and handover
Inspection as the work proceeds, testing within scope and clear care notes.
Also for vehicles
The workshop behind the interior.
Lightweight veneer and composite components
Light substrates, veneers and composite parts where every kilogram and fixing counts.
3D laser scanning and Rhino modelling
Existing spaces captured and modelled, so parts are resolved before timber is cut.
Mock-ups and prototypes
Full-size or partial mock-ups to test proportion, access and finish before manufacture.
Spray finishing
Controlled finishing in our in-house spray booths, from satin timber to high gloss.
Mobile installation teams
Our own people install, adjust and hand over, across Australia and internationally.

Tell us about the vehicle.
Drawings help, but a clear description of a working day is often the best place to start. Tell us what the vehicle needs to do and we will help you find the practical path to a finished interior.
